Excellent multi-function radio/flashlight cell phone charger

Ambient Weather WR 333 Emergency Flashlight

Ambient Weather WR 333 Emergency Flashlight

Okay, I had never heard of Ambient Weather products, and I wasn't expecting much, especially after a couple bad experiences with a well known brand in dynamo radios. I was so pleasantly surprised with the superior build quality of the Ambient Weather WR-333 radio that I actually had to show it off to some friends and family. Yes, it is made of plastic, but this plastic doesn't feel all cheap and flimsy like competing brands; this radio feels much more solid, and doesn't creak, groan, and flex when cranking the dynamo.

The unit has an easy to read backlit LCD display, and a great digital tuner that locks on to frequencies with clarity where other brands would just give static. It's nice to see a dynamo radio that isn't deaf as a brick.

One of the really nice features on this model is the carabineer style clip instead of a tiny wrist strap. It is really nice to be able to clip this onto various gear without worrying about it slipping off.

The other features are really nice too. The flashlight is twice as bright and more focused than the other brand radio it replaced (that sold for the same price, no less). The solar panel is great, it helps prolong play time before needing recharged when used outdoors in moderate to bright light. The ability to charge it up via USB is incredibly handy too.

Finally, an emergency radio that is worth it's salt! It's nice to see a product like this that gives the consumer their money's worth for once. Well done Ambient Weather, and thank you so much for not only an outstanding product, but also for the opportunity to test and review it.

Review and comparison of the WR-333 and WR-111B.

Honestly, I love both radios and think either is great for an emergency pack or camping.

    Main differences:
    Weight/Size: WR-333 is larger/430 grams vs. WR-111B is smaller/300 grams
Batteries: WR-333 comes with a 600 mA 3.7V lithium or can take 3x AAA. WR-111B comes with a 3.7A 800 mA (higher capacity/longer lasting battery) and will not take AAAs. The lithium batteries are replaceable and interchangeable so you can buy the larger capacity battery as a spare for either radio.
Charging light: WR-333 hides it behind a panel, WR-111B has it visible on front.
Radio Modes: Both have AM/FM/Weather Band. WR-333 also has weather alerts.
Recharging Options: Both have hand crank, solar, or USB charging options
Attachments: Both have cell phone charger cords and tips for mini-B and micro-B USB. WR-333 has an extra type of cellphone charger for some other type of phone. WR-111B has a cord that adapts from it's own mini-B to USB for charging via wall wort or AC or whatever. WR-333 has a USB input built in.
Flashlight: Both have 3 bright LEDs but the WR-333 puts these in a line that spaces out and creates side lobes whereas the WR-111B has them in a circular pattern and creates a tight spot. The effect is that I find the WR-111B more useful.
Method of attachment: WR-333 has a metal hinge clip that I actually find kind of flimsy though you could tie something to it. WR-111B has a string loop that I'd actually trust more.

Something I forgot to mention in the video:
Both of these do not like being rained on or being left in hot cars. So make sure you give them a little consideration in your pack.

More detailed review in the video along with my pick as to which I prefer (hint, it's the other one, but I like both)

  2. First, the differences:
The 111B has a wrist lanyard; the 333 has a caribiner clip.
The 111B is 3" tall, 2" thick and 5.5" long; the 333 is 3.75" tall, 2" thick and 7.75" long.
The lights are slightly different: the 111B has 3 LEDs in a circle; the 333 are in a row.
The 333 weighs a little bit more.
And, the major difference is the 333 can be powered with 3 AAA batteries (not included).

The rest is identical. My testing the two has turned up no differences between them in operation.

The plastic hand crank seems like it will hold up well if I don't get carried away.
The sound is quite good for the size of the radios.
The radios have digital tuning, but you have to step through the stations via up/down buttons.
    There are settings for AM/FM/Weather.
The ports for charging, etc are covered for protection when not in use.

I had bought the 111B to have to use in emergencies and was about to buy another when I was offered the 333 to try and review. One of these will stay in the house and the other in the car.

I am very pleased with their operation and features.

  3. Got this product 2 weeks ago and am very satisfied with it. For all those complaining about the product just remember that this is a simple emergency radio with some nice features. It is not equivalent to a power generator as some are expecting! I tested and used every feature on this device and they all work fine. The tuner is fantastic and I picked up all available stations in my area. Those having trouble don't know how to work it. Take your time, read the directions and experiment with the device before writing reviews. I highly recommend this item. Decided to get it after Hurricane Sandy. Another item to add to my emergency supply room!

  4. As I just indicated on the seller feedback for this item, I received this radio today - 2 days before the estimated arrival date. I tested each of the features and it works fine.

After Hurricane Sandy, I wanted a radio to work through any future power outages and the WR-333's ability to power via both solar energy and a hand crank caught my attention.

The unit is small and very compact so storage should not be a problem and can be easily and securely carried using the handle on the side.

Just wish the unit worked with less static, but for emergency uses, this looks like a fine item that will do the job. I recommend it highly to others.

  5. the product seemed larger in the picture and description but i actually prefer the smaller size. that being said it functions beautifully - sound and reception are fine and it charged easily. i've had it a few months now and it still is running on its initial charge. i find it a true necessity for any future power outages.

  6. Very happy with this radio. Works just as described and have recommended this to my friends. Picks up the NOAA weather channels as well as AM and FM signals in the area.

  7. I bought this radio after a bit of research - it is the current model from Ambient and as the previous model was out if stock and the one review was positive I thought I'd give it a try. I've had the radio for a week or so and am completely satisfied. It is solidly made, just the right size and works as advertised. Reception is good and so far everything works. I did charge my phone - check, used the FM radio - check- flashlight - check. I fortunately gave not lived through a few days or more without power - when I do I'll update my review. So far - very good indeed.
